Collection Notes

The online series “Collection Notes” features essay-length, scholarly writing on individual artworks from the collection of the Austrian Ludwig Foundation. For each text, the Foundation commissions a different author to not only discuss the selected works in great detail but also situate them in their wider historical context or consider their relevance in terms of contemporary political and social developments.

Whereas some works are selected for this series based on their relevance for projects being realized by the Foundation, others are chosen because of their overall importance within the art collection of the Austrian Ludwig Foundation and the lack of existing writing on a given work or the artist’s practice more generally. Over time, and as the number of essays increases, the “Collection Notes” series will evolve into a freely-available digital library on the collection, where texts can be selected and collated into a multitude of individual “collection books” based on readers’ respective interests.

All writing in the “Collection Notes” series is open-access and available in English, or in English and German.

Writings on the following works from the collection have been commissioned and are to be published throughout 2025/26:

Rosemarie Castoro, Land of Lads, 1975 and Land of Lashes, 1976; by Sabeth Buchmann

Sonia Gomes, Estrela da manhã, 2021 and Casa alugada (Entre Pérola e Vergalhão series), 2022; by Ana Gonçalves Magalhães

Ingrid Wiener, Norden, 2010–12; by Caroline Lillian Schopp
